Recently Alyssa, founder of Smile Strong and fellow cleft momma of two handsome, silly and playful little boys, contacted me to do a brand session for her. Smile Strong is a resource that helps cleft moms gain the confidence they need to navigate their child’s journey. Man, do I wish I would have had her knowledge and expertise back when our son, Kipton, was born. Kipton was born with a unilateral cleft lip and palate. We had several ultrasounds done during my pregnancy with him, and we never knew of his diagnosis. So, when he was born, we were shocked – very much in love with our handsome little bundle of joy, but shocked!

A cleft lip contains an opening in the upper lip that may extend into the nose. The opening may be on one side (as in Kipton’s case), both sides, or in the middle. A cleft palate occurs when the palate (the roof of the mouth) contains an opening into the nose.

Although our pediatrician helped us as much as he could when Kipton was born, having a resource like Smile Strong would have given us the confidence to overcome any obstacle. Obstacles like which bottles to use (since breastfeeding wasn’t an option) and advice and comfort as we went through multiple surgeries for Kipton starting at the age of just 3 months old.

Every 6 months Kipton goes to the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic to see his team of doctors (his surgeon, pediatrician, orthodontist, dentist, speech therapist, etc.), and we are SO thankful for them and what they’ve done for us! Perhaps they should partner up with Smile Strong in the near future?!
